Apple’s iPhone development roadmap typically spans several years, with the company working simultaneously with suppliers on multiple product generations. As a result, early leaks surrounding future models are not uncommon. For the iPhone 18 lineup, particularly the Pro and Pro Max variants, a clearer picture is beginning to emerge.

A notable shift could come in Apple’s launch strategy. The Apple is reportedly considering a two-phase release cycle. Premium models such as the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and a foldable iPhone may debut in September 2026, while standard versions could follow in spring 2027. This approach may help extend product life cycles and optimize revenue.

Design remains familiar, with subtle refinements

Sources suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max will retain a largely similar design to its predecessor. The rear camera module is expected to keep its raised layout with three lenses arranged in a triangular configuration. Screen sizes are also likely to remain unchanged at 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max.

However, Apple may move away from the two-tone rear finish in favor of a more seamless design. Improvements in the rear glass manufacturing process could reduce color discrepancies between the Ceramic Shield 2 layer and the metal frame, delivering a more unified premium look.

Battery life set to improve further

According to supply chain sources in China, the device may feature a battery capacity of around 5,100 to 5,200 mAh, slightly higher than the previous generation’s 5,088 mAh.

To accommodate the larger battery, Apple could increase the device’s thickness slightly, pushing its weight to around 243 grams. While heavier, the trade-off is expected to deliver even stronger battery performance, reinforcing the Pro Max line’s reputation for longevity.

A smaller Dynamic Island, closer to a full-screen design

One of the most anticipated changes is a reduction in the size of the Dynamic Island. Apple is reportedly working toward a design with only a small camera cutout, enabled by placing Face ID components beneath the display.

However, according to Mark Gurman, the Dynamic Island is unlikely to disappear entirely in this generation, though it could shrink by up to 35%, offering more usable screen space.

A20 Pro chip built on 2nm process

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to be powered by the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a 2nm process by TSMC.

This advancement could significantly increase transistor density, resulting in improved performance and energy efficiency. The chip is rumored to be about 15% faster and 30% more efficient than its predecessor. Apple may also integrate RAM directly into the chip package, enhancing processing speed and optimizing performance for Apple Intelligence features.

C2 modem enhances connectivity

Apple is continuing its push toward in-house components with the C2 modem, the successor to its first-generation modem.

The new modem is expected to deliver higher speeds, better energy efficiency and support for mmWave 5G in the US. This move also reduces reliance on Qualcomm, giving Apple greater control over performance and power consumption.

A notable shift in the supply chain could see Samsung providing a new camera sensor for the iPhone 18 series.

The rumored three-layer stacked sensor technology promises faster capture speeds, reduced noise and improved dynamic range. If confirmed, this would mark a rare departure from Apple’s long-standing reliance on Sony for image sensors.

Variable aperture for advanced photography

The iPhone 18 Pro Max may introduce a variable aperture lens, a feature typically found in professional DSLR cameras. This would allow users to control the amount of light entering the sensor.

The result is improved depth-of-field control, enabling sharper subjects and smoother background blur, opening up new creative possibilities for mobile photography.

5G satellite connectivity

Apple is reportedly developing full satellite-based 5G connectivity, going beyond current emergency-only features. If implemented, the device could access internet services even in areas without traditional cellular coverage.

This would represent a major step forward in global connectivity, particularly for remote regions.

Simplified Camera Control button

Apple may simplify the Camera Control button by removing its capacitive layer while retaining a pressure-sensitive mechanism. This adjustment could reduce production costs and minimize hardware issues without compromising functionality.

Bold new color options

The company is also experimenting with new color finishes, including a deep red variant for the Pro lineup. Rumors of purple and brown tones have also surfaced, though these may be variations of the same concept.

Interestingly, some reports suggest Apple could continue omitting black from the Pro lineup, marking a second consecutive year of breaking with tradition.

A device worth waiting for

With upgrades spanning a 2nm chip, enhanced camera capabilities, improved battery life and expanded connectivity, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is shaping up as a meaningful evolution.

While its external design may remain familiar, the internal advancements could be compelling enough to justify the wait for Apple’s next flagship.
