A life-changing accident at 20

A video capturing the groom, walking with one leg and crutches, holding a bouquet as he makes his way to the bride, garnered 2.2 million views and over 85,000 likes on TikTok in just a few days.

The sight of a one-legged groom, neatly dressed, exuding confidence and wearing a beaming smile on his big day, moved many to tears.

The groom in the video is Bui Van Tuyen (born 1997, from Lam Dong, currently living and working in Ho Chi Minh City). Behind that now-viral wedding moment is a journey marked by pain, perseverance, and the quest to find meaning again after losing a limb.

Tuyen shared with VietNamNet that he once studied at a sports training school, thanks to his athletic physique and talent.

But in 2017, tragedy struck.

On his way home from Ho Chi Minh City, he was involved in a devastating traffic accident. The injuries were so severe that doctors had to amputate his left leg to save his life.

“That was a mental and physical breakdown for me,” Tuyen recalled. “One morning, out of habit, I got out of bed as if I still had two legs  -  and immediately collapsed. That moment is burned into my memory.”

In his early twenties, with dreams and ambitions ahead, losing part of his body plunged the young man from Lam Dong into deep despair.

But eventually, he realized he had no choice but to accept his new reality and adapt. He learned to walk with crutches and gradually adjusted to a life on one leg.

In the early stages, life was unimaginably difficult. But with unwavering support from family and friends, and sheer personal determination, Tuyen slowly rebuilt his confidence.

“My parents were my rock  -  they comforted me and gave me the motivation to start over and create a new life,” he said.

Within a year, Tuyen had become fully independent in his daily life. He decided to return to school and pursue higher education to give himself a fresh chance.

A complete wedding

He never stopped trying to build a future and find happiness.

He enrolled in an information technology program  -  a challenging path, especially since it wasn’t his strong suit. Yet he remained committed, determined to earn a living and build a future.

Tuyen continued to live with optimism and accountability, never letting his disability become a barrier.

Then came Anh Thu (born 2001, also from Lam Dong)  -  a graceful young woman whose presence made his world feel whole again.

They met in late 2024 on a dating app. Right from the start, Tuyen told her about his situation. She wasn’t fazed. In fact, after watching the videos Tuyen made documenting his daily life, she admired his spirit even more.

“She wanted to meet me in person to see what I was like,” Tuyen said. “After a few dates, we realized how much we had in common  -  in values, in character  -  and chose to move forward together.”

Her empathy and understanding touched Tuyen deeply. In his eyes, Thu was gentle, thoughtful, and incredibly caring  -  often surprising him with her attention to detail.

After about six months of dating, the couple shared their relationship with their families. While Thu’s parents initially had some concerns, her firm commitment and Tuyen’s sincerity eventually won them over.

“I’ll never forget what her father told me: ‘Just love my daughter with all your heart,’” Tuyen said, holding back tears.

On November 1, the couple officially tied the knot, stepping into a new chapter of life  -  one filled with joy and companionship. 

The most emotional moment of the wedding, Tuyen said, was when he and Thu stood hand in hand, expressing their gratitude to both sets of parents. From the audience, many wiped away tears.

After all the pain, loss, and struggles, Tuyen  -  with the love of his life by his side  -  had finally stepped out of the shadow of his twenties and into a future filled with happiness.
