VietNamNet Bridge - In severe storms, vegetables are still green at the steel house of DK1, hundreds of kilometers from the mainland.

Spinach, cabbage, lettuce, melon, gourd ... are grown in plastic trays, foam boxes or any objects that naval soldiers can use as flowerpots.

A pot become a vegetable "garden".

To grow vegetables on the rig house is a miracle. Soldiers have to cover vegetables from wind and storms.

"In March – April, the sea is still calm so vegetables grow normally but from August to November, the sea is rough. Vegetables are damaged by saltwater," a soldier said.

Eggplants.

Each soldier has about 20 grams of green vegetables each meal.

The favourite "fruit" of soldiers is chili.

Colonel To Van Thu - Deputy Chief of Staff of the Naval Zone 2 - said all DK1 rig houses grow vegetables. On average each rig house collects 500-600 kg of vegetable a year.

Fresh water is like gold on the rig house so soldiers use water after bathing or clothes washing to water vegetables.

DK1 houses are clusters of economic - scientific – technological services built on the southern continental shelf, about 250-350 nautical miles. The DK1 rig houses are managed by the Naval Zone 2.

The soldiers who work on the rig houses tasks cannot return to the mainland for at least 8-9 months. Many soldiers live on the rig houses for 2-3 years.
