Thung Ui is surrounded by limestone mountains.
Located just 3 kilometers from Bai Dinh Pagoda, Thung Ui belongs to the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex in Tay Hoa Lu ward. Enclosed by towering limestone ranges, this valley has long remained off the radar due to its secluded nature.
In recent years, however, it has undergone notable development, including the restoration of key cultural and spiritual landmarks such as Dan Kinh Thien, Kinh Dia Hall, Kinh Nhan Hall, and stilt houses. These additions, along with a newly designed lake system and supportive infrastructure, have transformed Thung Ui into a budding spiritual tourism site.
A highlight of the area is its annual Dan Kinh Thien Festival, held on the 10th day of the third lunar month. The event honors King Dinh Tien Hoang, who unified Vietnam in the 10th century by ending the period of civil war among twelve feudal lords. According to historical records and local lore, after ascending the throne in 968, Dinh Bo Linh established the Dan Kinh Thien altar here to offer sacrifices to heaven and earth, declaring his sovereignty.
With its emerald lake nestled under the cliffs and sacred architecture woven into the landscape, Thung Ui offers an atmosphere of solemn beauty and quiet reverence. Visitors often liken it to a backdrop from a historical film - an impression enhanced by the many young travelers donning traditional costumes for photoshoots in the valley.
In addition to exploring spiritual halls with intricate woodwork and symbolic carvings, guests can immerse themselves in Muong ethnic culture. Traditional games such as bamboo pole dancing and gong beating are available, along with opportunities to wear Muong attire and observe classic water wheels.
A representative from the Thung Ui Management Board shared that final touches on the site’s development are underway, with plans to officially open to visitors during the upcoming Lunar New Year (Binh Ngo).
