Tran Hong Thai was born in 1974 and is originally from Ha Tinh province. He completed his university education in Russia and later earned a doctorate in Earth Sciences and Mathematics at Heidelberg University in Germany.
He is currently a member of the 14th Party Central Committee.
Earlier in his career, he spent many years working at the General Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
He has also held several important positions, including Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee and Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Council.
In September 2025, the Prime Minister appointed him as permanent vice president of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
Prior to his appointment, Chau Van Minh, a former member of the Party Central Committee, stepped down from the position of president of the academy.
He has since joined the executive committee and standing committee and serves as secretary of the Party Committee of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations for the 2025-2030 term.
The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology is a government agency responsible for conducting fundamental research in natural sciences and developing new technologies.
The institution also provides scientific foundations for the management of science and technology, as well as for the formulation of policies, strategies and development planning for the country’s socio-economic growth.
In addition, the academy is tasked with training high-level scientific and technological human resources in accordance with the law.
The academy currently has four vice presidents: Bui The Duy, Tran Tuan Anh, Le Truong Giang and Chu Hoang Ha.
