National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man takes the oath of office.

On the very first working day of the session, the National Assembly passed a resolution confirming Mr. Tran Thanh Man’s re-election following a secret ballot.

A total of 491 deputies voted in favor, reflecting strong consensus among lawmakers.

Man, a member of the Politburo and Chair of the 15th National Assembly, will continue to serve in the same role for the 16th term.

Immediately after the vote, he took the oath of office in accordance with constitutional requirements.

“Under the sacred red flag with a yellow star of the Fatherland, before the National Assembly and voters nationwide, I - the Chair of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - pledge absolute loyalty to the Fatherland, the people, and the Constitution, and commit to striving to fulfill all duties entrusted by the Party, the State, and the people,” he declared.

A long political career

Born in 1962 in Can Tho, Tran Thanh Man holds a doctorate in economics.

He has served as a member of the Party Central Committee across multiple terms, including the 10th (alternate), 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th tenures, and as a Politburo member in the 13th and 14th terms. He is also a deputy of the 13th, 14th, 15th, and now 16th National Assembly.

His career includes extensive experience in local governance in Can Tho, where he held positions such as Chief of Office, Vice Chairman, and Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, as well as Secretary of the City Party Committee.

He later served as Vice Chairman and then Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee before being elected Vice Chair of the National Assembly in April 2021.

In July 2021, he continued as Vice Chair and was later assigned the role of Standing Vice Chair. In May 2024, during the 7th session of the 15th National Assembly, he was elected Chair of the legislature.

Next steps in leadership consolidation

Later the same day, the National Assembly is scheduled to elect several Vice Chairs and members of the Standing Committee, as well as key positions including the Chair of the Council for Ethnic Affairs, heads of committees, the State Auditor General, and the Secretary General of the National Assembly.

Under the 2013 Constitution, the Chair of the National Assembly presides over parliamentary sessions, certifies laws and resolutions, leads the Standing Committee, oversees external relations of the legislature, and maintains close coordination with deputies.

The role also includes chairing key conferences, directing legislative agendas, and ensuring the effective functioning of the National Assembly’s institutional framework.
