Throughout 2025, fans could clearly see a carefully mapped-out strategy from the South Korean coach. Young talents from the U23 setup were gradually introduced into the senior national team, laying the groundwork for the future.
Even as the U23 side navigated a packed competition schedule, Kim Sang Sik remained consistent in selecting promising players - particularly those yet to break into the starting lineup - and giving them exposure at senior level.
This approach, combined with the momentum gained after the AFC U23 Championship finals, saw several young players emerge as rising stars in the V-League. It has fuelled hopes that more U23 players could feature in the national squad for the ASEAN Cup 2026 this July, rather than the limited two spots seen in the previous tournament.
That ambition is understandable, especially after the relatively impressive performances delivered by U23 Vietnam at the continental stage earlier this year.
Yet the reality is far less forgiving.
Despite receiving close attention and priority from the coaching staff, the path to major tournaments such as the ASEAN Cup is not automatically reserved for youth players.
The reasons are deeply rooted in football itself - experience, tactical maturity and match-readiness. A look back at national team call-ups throughout 2025 and early 2026 shows that while U23 players were present in significant numbers, their actual minutes on the pitch told a different story.
In key positions, seasoned players continue to hold the edge. Their experience and composure remain vital, particularly in a short and high-pressure tournament like the ASEAN Cup, where risks are carefully calculated.
This does not mean the door is closed for U23 Vietnam. On the contrary, there are still an estimated four to five spots available for those who truly stand out and fit the coach’s tactical vision.
Ultimately, selection will not be based on potential alone. It will be determined by consistent form, adaptability and the ability to seize opportunities during each training camp.
For U23 Vietnam, the race to the ASEAN Cup 2026 is not just competitive - it is unforgiving.
