The Ministry of Health reported a spike in COVID-19 cases in the past week, as Việt Nam recorded 183 new infections on Tuesday.

It was also the highest number of daily cases recorded since the beginning of 2023, followed by 122 cases on April 8.

Most new infections are in the northern region, with the highest figure in Hà Nội.

Thanh Nhàn Hospital in the capital city said that the number of its patients infected with COVID-19 in April is already triple the amount from the whole of March, increasing from 25 to 75.

The facility is providing treatment to 10 COVID-19 patients, all of them are over 60 and have underlying health conditions.

The hospital noted that while all of these patients are required to have had four COVID-19 vaccines, a majority only had two or three, and some are still to be vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases is treating 74 COVID-19 patients, 10 of whom are on oxygen support.

On April 8, 52 infections were detected among teachers and students of Khánh Yên Secondary School in Văn Bàn District, Lào Cai Province.

Most patients showed mild or no symptoms. Some are self-quarantining at home while attending classes via online devices.

The school has resumed operations as normal, although large gatherings have been temporarily halted.

Health experts believe that the spike is caused by the transition from spring to summer weather, which creates ideal conditions for viruses to multiply, including SARS-CoV-2.

Dr Trần Đắc Phu, former director of the health ministry’s General Department of Preventive Medicine, said that COVID-19 would not disappear as in the case of SARS in 2003.

Due to opening policies for tourism and development, the situation of the disease in Việt Nam is linked to the global context, he said.

Dr Phu noted that people need to pay attention to preventive measures, wearing masks in high-risk environments, washing hands regularly and refraining from contact with suspected COVID-19 cases.

He added that those with symptoms need to be proactive in curbing the spread of the disease. Special focus should be placed on protecting high-risk groups of senior citizens and those with underlying conditions, as well as on vaccination.

The health ministry will continue to monitor the situation in the country and abroad and strengthen control at border gates, in communities and health facilities.

More patient samples will be sent for testing and genome sequencing to detect new variants, especially those that can cause serious illness.

The ministry will also continue the vaccination drive, focusing on high-risk groups and children aged from five to 12, especially those in major cities and provinces with many international tourists.

Việt Nam has recorded more than 11.5 million coronavirus infections, ranking 13th out of 230 countries and territories. Among them, over 10.6 million have recovered.

The country’s COVID-19 death toll is 43,186, or 0.4 per cent of the total cases. There have been no COVID-related fatalities in almost the past four months.

More than 266 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the country. Among the adult population, more than 52 million have received the third dose, while nearly 18 million have had the fourth dose.

International Series Vietnam 2023 opens in Khanh Hoa

The Asia's premier golf tournament - International Series Vietnam 2023 - will take place in Cam Ranh, the south-central coastal province of Khanh Hoa, from April 13-16, marking its return to Vietnam after seven years.

As part of the Asian Tour and the International Series closely affiliated with LIV Golf, the tournament will bring together 156 golfers.

This year's event will feature four days of competition. After two days of play, golfers from the 65th place will advance to the final two rounds to compete for a total prize worth up to 2 million USD. Over 1,000 spectators are expected to come to the event.

At present, Vietnam has more than 60,000 golfers, four times the number in 2015. Along with the nearly 100 golf courses that have been put into operation, it is enough to show the outstanding development of this sport in recent times.

Book spotlights Vietnamese, French imprints in names of streets

More than 200 streets and landmarks in Vietnam and France that carry imprints of history of the relations between the two countries have been spotlighted in a book titled “Dau an Phap-Viet qua ten nhung con duong (French-Vietnamese imprints through the names of roads) by overseas Vietnamese writer Tran Thu Dung.

The 292-page book is introduced on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries and 10-year of the bilateral strategic partnership.

It shows great efforts of the author in collecting data and exploring the history of names of locations with their names attached to France and Vietnam.

The origin of the names and stories in the process of naming streets in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Lat city (Lam Dong province) as well as those in Paris, Lyon and Marseilles are told in both Vietnamese and French, which go along with precious pictures and documents as well as the geographic locations, giving reader a deep insight of the streets and landmarks.

The writer told Vietnam News Agency correspondents in Paris that as the names of the streets may change with the developments of the history, she wants to write the book to maintain a memory of the history, and contribute to fostering the friendship between the two peoples.

President of the France-Vietnam Friendship Association in Eure & Loir region Gilbert Tenèze, one of the first to read the book, hailed the efforts of the author in promoting the friendship between the two countries, underlining that the book shows the sentiments that the two countries give each other.

Earlier in 2014, Dung also introduced a book on Vietnamese imprints in the names of streets in France.

Quang Nam named among Asia’s most sustainable destinations

UK-based travel magazine Wanderlust has named the central province of Quang Nam among Asia’s top four sustainable destinations.

The magazine stated that the list features places which are all well worth a visit if visitors are seeking an eco-friendly escape.

“Hoi An Kayak Tours takes visitors on a paddle through the Nipa mangroves, navigating fishing boats and stilt village,” the magazine shared.

“In town, Refillables sells eco-friendly travel necessities, from shampoo to toothbrushes, while nearby zero-waste restaurant The Field uses wild and organic local produce to create rustic dishes, such as its aubergine and tofu broth,” it added

It also suggested that visitors should spend the night among the blossoming trees at An Villa, which provides filtered drinking water to guests, thereby reducing the need for plastic use.

Three other sustainable destinations on Wanderlust’s list include Bhutan, Singapore, and Ataúro Island in Timor-Leste.

New theatre centre offers training for young talents

The HCM City Theatre Association has opened a theatre centre offering performance skills training for young artists in the city.

The HCM City Theatre Training Centre offers long and short-term training courses for young graduates of art schools and those who are working for drama troupes and theatres.

The courses are taught by celebrated artists, such as theatre director-actor Trần Ngọc Giàu, actress Mỹ Uyên, and script writer Trần Văn Hưng.

Cải lương (reformed opera) stars, including People’s Artist Kim Cương and Meritorious Artist Lê Thiện, are also instructors.

The participants of the centre’s courses will study singing, music and dance before being trained at different performance levels.

They will be trained in traditional art forms including cải lương (reformed opera) in the south, chèo (traditional opera) in the north, and tuồng (classical drama) in the central region.

They will also get opportunities to perform in dramas and theatre plays at 5B Small Theatre, a leading state-owned art troupe of the region.

According to Chi, who has 25 years in the industry, studying at school is not enough for young performers to properly know their art. “So our centre offers special courses to help them improve their performance skills,” she said.

Chi began her career in 1994. She graduated in drama and theatre directing from the HCM City University of Theatre and Cinematography in 2019.

She opened the TKC Drama Club in 2015. Her club has 15 artists, not including stage workers, offering drama shows featuring both traditional and modern styles of Vietnamese drama.

Her club’s actors have attended and won several top prizes for best drama play and best artist at national theatre contests and festivals.

Chi has also worked with art schools and traditional theatres to train students.

Six violations of TikTok in Vietnam pointed out

The Authority of Broadcasting, Television and Electronic Information has pointed out six major violations committed by TikTok in Vietnam and plans to probe its operations, heard at a regular press conference yesterday, April 6.

First, TikTok failed to handle violations in content related to politics, hostile activities against the Party and Government, fake news, harmful content, and inappropriate content for children.

Second, TikTok used an automated algorithm to create trends and spread content for views, regardless of its offensive content, which has a negative impact on the community and youth.

Third, it lacked effective measures to prevent the sale of counterfeit goods, illicit drugs and supplements with unknown origins.

Fourth, this short-form video platform failed to manage the activities of TikTok idols, many of whom create inappropriate content to attract viewers’ curiosity.

For example, some TikTok idols have recently created unsuitable online challenges, in which the more shocking and offensive the content is, the more gifts or money they receive. TikTok receives 70% of the total revenue from such challenges.

Fifth, non-copyrighted content has been rampant on this platform without any effective prevention measures from TikTok.

Sixth, TikTok has no effective measures to prevent users from using someone else’s private and personal images to spread fake news or defame and insult others.

TikTok has yet to respond to the accusations.

Previously, Nguyen Lam Thanh, the representative of TikTok Vietnam, said that the platform would update its Community Guidelines on April 21 to ensure that TikTok is a safe and welcoming environment for all users.

The Ministry of Information and Communications will work with other ministries to inspect TikTok’s activities, evaluate their impacts on the community, especially young people, and determine appropriate measures to ensure that cross-border platforms comply with Vietnamese laws.

Master Long was awarded the Third Class Labor Medal in 1999 and the Second Class Labor Medal in 2001. He has survived four heart surgeries with an unbreakable spirit.

Promoting the value of Hang Trong paintings by new experiments

Young artists have made efforts to preserve the value of traditional Hang Trong paintings using traditional art forms of Vietnam, such as lacquer and silk.

Hang Trong folk paintings are frequently used as Tet décor or worshipping objects. Few people know that these paintings also depict the landscape and cultural practices of the populace.

Visitors to the "Hang Trong folk paintings" exhibition, held by the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem District, can reflect on the daily lives of farmers in the picture Rest or the society in the past in miniature in the painting Western Festival.

These paintings by Hang Trong artisans were restored to the traditional standards by artisan Le Dinh Nghien, and now they are in possession of collector Nguyen Quang Trung.

The exhibition also features 23 works by young artists inspired by Hang Trong folk paintings. These pieces were created using many materials found in painter Nguyen The Son’s installation space.

The exhibition is the result of artist Nguyen The Son’s latest effort, "From Tradition to Tradition" where young artists attempted to dialogue and uphold the value of traditional paintings using various Vietnamese painting materials such as lacquer and silk.

A group of young artists who majored in Lacquer and Silk at the Faculty of Painting, Vietnam University of Fine Arts acquired the technique from renowned artisan Le Dinh Nghien through the initiative.

Health ministry to accelerate polio vaccination rate

The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology has urged localities to promptly provide routine immunizations for babies born in 2021 and 2022 as the rate went down in these years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move came as the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication in the Western Pacific moved Viet Nam from the list of low risk countries to the list of countries at high risk of wild polio import or having cases of polio caused by genetically modified viruses.

The WHO recommended Viet Nam should rashly achieve the vaccination rate set out in the Expanded Immunization Program, especially for such diseases as polio, measles and rubella.

Accordingly, children born in 2021 and 2022 will be vaccinated against polio in the second quater of 2023.

Polio vaccines are supported by GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance Immunization. Syringes and safety boxes have been distributed to localities across Viet Nam.

Polio used to be one of the leading causes of death and severe sequelae in children under five years of age in Viet Nam. Thanks to the implementation of polio vaccine, Viet Nam has controlled polio since 2000.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, infants in Viet Nam missed out on lifesaving vaccines. However, the Government has made efforts to get the routine immunization for children back on track.

Viet Nam has returned to the strong child and adolescent immunization system it had built before the pandemic –the system that stood up strongly to safely and effectively deliver COVID-19 vaccines to the people.

Two new plant species discovered at Vu Quang National Park

Scientists have announced the discovery of two new species of the Lasianthus genus in the family Rubiaceae at Vu Quang National Park in Viet Nam's central province of Ha Tinh.

These are 2 of 40 species of new Lasianthus to science. They were published as a book with ISBN code in a volume and separate issue of the 150-page International Specialized Journal Phytotaxa (New Zealand) on January 26, 2023.

The two species, Lasianthus vuquangensis and Lasianthus hatinhensis were named after the two geographical names Vu Quang and Ha Tinh. The discovery and addition of 2 new species for science confirm the very high biodiversity at the "ASEAN Heritage Park".

The discovery resulted from joint efforts between Vu Quang National Park, the Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences, and Japan's Kyushu University.

Lasianthus vuquangensis is found at the height of 1,000-1,240 metres above sea level, while Lasianthus hatinhensis lives at an altitude of 1,600-1,800 metres above sea level.

However, it was only until early 2023 that they were fully described and announced by the Institute of Tropical Biology under the Viet Nam Academy of Science and Technology and the Tropical Biosphere Research Centre, University of the Ryukyus, in the work "A revision of the genus Lasianthus Jack (Rubiaceae) from Viet Nam", featuring 40 new Lasianthus species found in Viet Nam.

Vu Quang National Park is one of the places with the richest biodiversity in Viet Nam. It was named an ASEAN Heritage Park in July 2022.

With its biodiversity, Vu Quang National Park was officially declared and awarded the title of "ASEAN Heritage Park" by the AHP Council, ASEAN Center for Biodiversity (ACB) at the 6th ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP) Conference taking place in Pakse, Laos' Champasak province in October 2019.

In July 2022, it received the Viet Nam Environment Award from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
