Overseas Vietnamese in Cuba celebrate Tet

They together made “Chung” cakes (square glutinous rice cakes), a typical dish for the Tet festival. Young Vietnamese people were told about Tet rituals and customs.
Hoang Kim Anh, First Secretary of the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba, said overseas Vietnamese and students in Cuba have been excited about activities on the occasion of the Tet festival.
It is not easy to organise an event to make 200 "Chung" cakes for the Vietnamese community, she said, adding that the embassy staff have to make plans to buy and store pork, sticky rice and green beans which are shipped from Vietnam.
She added that they used wild banana leaves to wrap the cakes instead of “dong” (phrynium) leaves.
Moreover, the activities also helped introduce and promote Vietnamese cultural values to international friends.
“Xuan Que huong” programme expected to become cultural, art highlight
“Xuan Que huong” (Homeland Spring), an annual programme for overseas Vietnamese (OVs) during the Lunar New Year (Tet) Festival, is expected to become a cultural and art highlight that will leave a strong impression on participants, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang.
This year's programme, jointly held by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, will take place from February 1-2 with diverse and meaningful activities.
OVs will have a chance to experience many activities, including a city tour and visits to some nearby localities, a seminar and a meeting with leaders of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee and the People’s Committee of HCM City.
Presient Vo Van Thuong and his spouse will join OVs and locals in HCM City to offer flowers in tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh and President Ton Duc Thang, and release carp fish on the day for Ong Cong, Ong Tao (Kitchen Gods) at Nha Rong Wharf.
At a gala night on February 2, President Vo Van Thuong will extend Tet greetings to the Vietnamese community all around the world and beat the drum to start a festive season.
The Deputy Minister said that currently, about 6 million Vietnamese people are living in 130 countries and territories, 80% of whom are in developed countries.
To date, all major policies related to OVs have been specified and turned into particular projects, including a project to organise a day to honour Vietnamese language abroad in the 2023-2030 period, and another to promote resources from OVs for national development in the new situation. Recently, the Land Law (revised) has been approved by the National Assembly with many regulations providing favourable conditions for OVs in land-related issues, Hang noted.
Along with the increasingly reinforced and completed Vietnamese associations and organisations abroad, support activities to OVs, especially those in areas suffering difficulties, natural disasters and war have been implemented in an active and timely manner.
Many activities have been held annually for the Vietnamese community abroad, including visits for OVs to Truong Sa and DK1 platform, Vietnam summer camp, and the “Xuan Que huong” programme.
The official said that this year, the OV affairs will continue to be strengthened in a more comprehensive manner, aiming to show the sentiment and responsibility of the Party and State towards the Vietnamese community abroad, and encourage and back OVs to head to the homeland.
This year, the OV affairs will be organised following two directions of fostering the great solidarity and making full use of resources from OVs, Hang said. She pointed out seven major solutions, including supporting OVs in enhancing legal status and settling down, attracting resources from OVs, promoting national cultural identity among the community, and proving more information to the community.
Hang highlighted a number of specific activities to attract and optimise the resources from OVs, including the organisation of a conference for OV across the globe, bringing OV delegations to localities at home, and completing mechanisms, policies and laws regarding OVs.

The northern mountainous province of Lang Son’s annual peach blossom festival kicked off on the first day of February.
Lasting through March 9, the event features myriad cultural activities, including a trade fair, sightseeing and experimental tours, gardening and cooking contests, musical performances, and an art exchange with Pingxiang city, China’s southwestern Zhuang Autonomous Region of Guangxi.
At the opening ceremony, Standing Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee and head of the organising committee of the festival Duong Xuan Huyen said that the festival has created an enticing cultural space to promote Lang Son’s economic, tourism, and service development, attracting more tourists to the border land.
Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong highlighted the province’s potential for cultural and festive activities serving its tourism growth, job creation and better living standards.
The official recommended Lang Son come up with more tourism products and invest in upgrading and completing related infrastructure.
The natural condition of the province is perfect for many beautiful, unique, and rare peach varieties. In spring, the whole land is blanketed in blooming peach trees that are grown aplenty across villages, hillsides and streets. It is also a must destination for tourists when the Lunar New Year (Tet) comes.

Key players return from injuries, boosting Vietnamese team's prospects for World Cup qualifiers
Many of Vietnam's national team stars have fully recovered and returned to training and competition at their clubs, preparing for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March.
The recovery of these players is good news for French coach Troussier, as their presence provides the Vietnamese team with more quality options for the crucial matches against Indonesia in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Vietnam's objective in the matches against Indonesia is to secure six points, which would open the door for further progress in the tournament.
However, the two matches, scheduled to take place at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on March 21 and My Dinh National Stadium on March 26, promise to be challenging. Indonesia have significantly transformed since the addition of several naturalised players, and their confidence is soaring following their progress at the 2023 Asian Cup.
The disappointing performance at the 2023 Asian Cup has subjected coach Troussier to immense pressure from the media and public. Fans are particularly interested in whether the contract with the French coach will be extended.
Nevertheless, a representative of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has confirmed that Troussier will retain his position despite the team's underwhelming performance at the Asian Cup.
"The Vietnamese team is not the exclusive property of the VFF or coach Troussier; they are the collective asset of the country," said Nguyen Xuan Vu, VFF Vice President in charge of communications.
"We will collaborate with clubs to ensure that the Vietnamese team have the strongest line-up before entering the World Cup qualifying matches in March.
"In the event that the Vietnamese team do not achieve success, the VFF will sit down with coach Troussier and evaluate the situation, but the contract does not contain an immediate termination clause."
Troussier assumed the position in early 2023, succeeding Korean coach Park Hang-seo, and his contract with the VFF will run until the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
