Taste Atlas, a renowned global food website, has recognized two iconic Vietnamese dishes among the world’s best appetizers. Chao Tom (Sugar Cane Shrimp), a unique delicacy originating from Hue, and Nem (Spring Rolls) have both secured their spots on this prestigious list.

Chao Tom, ranked 27th globally, is a traditional appetizer featuring minced shrimp seasoned with garlic, sugar, and salt, wrapped around a piece of sugar cane.

In some variations, ground pork is also added before the mixture is steamed, grilled, or fried. This dish is traditionally served with rice noodles, fresh herbs, and a sweet-sour dipping sauce, with the shrimp peeled off the sugar cane before eating.

At 72nd place, Nem (Spring Rolls) also made the cut. This popular dish consists of a flavorful filling, typically of ground pork and shrimp, wrapped in thin rice paper.

Common ingredients include carrots, jicama, mushrooms, glass noodles, and bean sprouts. The rolls are deep-fried to achieve a crispy golden exterior and are usually served with fresh herbs and a dipping sauce.

Both dishes, though traditionally enjoyed as appetizers, are also commonly served as main courses, highlighting their versatility.
