"The Vietnam IPv6 conversion plan, IPv6 For Gov in 2024" has just been approved by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC). As the new-generation version of internet addresses, IPv6 almost has limitless address space. The transition to using IPv6 is to ensure address resources for internet development and industrial Internet, with new services such as Internet of things, cloud computing and 5G/6G networks.
Under the newly approved plan, MIC decided that the IPv6 usage rate of Vietnam’s internet would be 65-80 percent by the end of December 2024, making Vietnam among the eight countries with the highest rates of IPv6 users.
Regarding the adoption of IPv6 of state services and networks, the targeted rate is 90-100 percent for electronic information portals and public service portals in 2024.
As for the adoption of IPv6 of enterprises’ services and networks, MIC wants Viettel, VNPT, FPT Telecom and MobiFone to have 95 percent of FTTH (fiber to the home) and mobile subscribers operating with IPv6. The targeted usage rate of IPv6 of the entire enterprises’ networks must be 80 percent or higher.
Other businesses, including ISP (internet service providers), mobile service providers and data centers – IDC, cloud computing service, digital content and internet address members have been required to u IPv6 for their networks and services, with the targeted rate of 50 percent by the end of 2024.
To reach that end, MIC has assigned duties to each agency and unit and asked them to cooperate to perform their duties.
In addition to a plan on organizing conferences on IPv6 adoption in 2024, the other four groups of tasks that need to be done this year include converting IPv6 for Vietnam’s internet network, IPv6 For Gov; drawing working program on supervising and supporting the conversion into IPv6; training and practicing; and propaganda.
It is expected that a conference on IPv6 conversion and IPv6 For Gov 2024 plan will be held by VNNIC (Vietnam Internet Network Information Center).
According to MIC, the IPv6 usage rate of Vietnam’s internet had reached 59 percent by the end of December, making Vietnam rank second in ASEAN and ninth in the world. 100 percent of the national important internet infrastructure operates with IPv6. Mobile network operators have also conducted a transition to IPv6, with 76.48 million broadband internet users using IPv6 by the end of 2023.
