The project is part of a newly approved national list of priority energy infrastructure, authorized by the Vietnamese government.
Strategic project to boost regional green energy trade
The government’s newly issued list includes:
32 power generation projects
7 LNG storage facilities
7 projects from gas-to-power chains
Several transmission line and substation projects
1 petrochemical refinery project
3 renewable energy industrial and service centers across South-Central and Southern Vietnam
Major offshore wind projects approved
Two key offshore wind initiatives are included in the energy list:
The South-Central Region Offshore Wind Development Zone 1, featuring 2,000 MW of capacity divided into four component projects. These are scheduled to enter operation between 2025 and 2030.
The Offshore Wind Power Export Project, targeting 3,000 MW for transmission from Vietnam to Singapore and Malaysia, with planned operation by 2033.
To facilitate the export project, Vietnam will construct a high-voltage undersea DC cable, which could traverse the territorial waters of Singapore, Malaysia, or Indonesia, depending on the final technical route.
Cable factory to support renewable energy infrastructure
To support the HVDC cable and future renewable energy infrastructure, a high-voltage cable manufacturing facility will be established in Ho Chi Minh City.
This plant is scheduled to begin operations by 2030, bolstering Vietnam’s role as a green energy hub in Southeast Asia.
