Held at the Vietnam Fine Arts Association Exhibition Hall on 16 Ngo Quyen, this is Sophie Trinh's debut solo exhibition, where all the displayed works are nude paintings of her own body.

Sophie Trinh, not only an accomplished painter but also an actress and model, has chosen to follow her deep passion for painting. With a romantic and emotionally rich spirit, she has dedicated years to honing her artistic skills and pursuing her passion.

Reflecting on her exhibition, Sophie Trinh shared, "In modern life, people seem to be facing loneliness and more complex emotions than ever. Through “Layers of Emotions”, I want to convey a message of sharing, as today’s life often leaves each person with their own unspeakable feelings and a deep-seated desire to be understood, loved, and cared for. These are powerful emotions, yet they are often repressed, unable to be expressed... And I want to convey these feelings through my art."

Having earned a master's degree from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts and possessing a diligent, serious approach to artistic work, Sophie Trinh is among the few female Vietnamese artists who paint nude self-portraits. This exhibition is also the first of its kind where the artist has portrayed herself in this intimate perspective.

Sophie Trinh explained that to view herself from different angles, she relied on the help of cameras and smartphones—tools that traditional artists rarely use. As a result, her paintings reflect a process of self-objectification through another’s eyes while remaining deeply subjective in expressing her emotions.

Sophie Trinh often begins by photographing herself, then uses these images as a reference for her paintings. However, she emphasizes that the creative process is not about replicating what is captured in the photograph but involves her imagination and creativity to achieve the desired outcome.

Sophie Trinh revealed that there were times when she had to stop working on a painting midway because what appeared on the canvas did not meet her expectations. Rather than force herself to complete a work she was unsatisfied with, she decided to destroy it.

The approval to exhibit 23 nude paintings came as a pleasant surprise to Sophie Trinh, as many had warned her that such a sensitive subject might prevent the exhibition from taking place. Fortunately, everything proceeded as planned, and all 23 artworks were approved for display.

Artist Le Thiet Cuong commented: "Sophie Trinh’s paintings combine the light of realism with the abstract space of expressionism, leaving behind flowing color patches, free-falling droplets, and loose brushstrokes. Sophie is not an artist seeking something radically new or innovative, but she uses the language of painting and the blending of styles to tell her personal story. This approach gives her paintings a gentle, friendly, and approachable quality, while also offering her vast potential to explore and create new themes and narratives."

As one of the first to witness and follow the creation process of “Layers of Emotions”, artist Le Thiet Cuong observed that Sophie Trinh is an artist who paints herself with a passionate self-love, as if she were loving a dream lover. This unique quality allows Sophie Trinh to deeply resonate with viewers, enabling them to "touch" the emotions she conveys.

The “Layers of Emotions” exhibition by Sophie Trinh will be open from August 25 to September 2 at the Vietnam Fine Arts Association Exhibition Hall, 16 Ngo Quyen, Hanoi.
