Mr. Nguyen Huu Thang, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Tri, said the authorities were considering measures to preserve the newlydiscovered tunnel in the town of Cua Tung, Vinh Linh district.

This tunnel was unearthed at a depth of 4-5 meters while workers were digging the foundation of the Cua Tung border station. They also found a copper tray and a pot with tea leaves inside.

Thang said the tunnel might have remains.

Local authorities said that the tunnel was dug by the local police force in 1965-1967. Currently, some local elder people know about the tunnel.

The tunnel is located very near to Cua Tung Estuary, the downstream Ben Hai River, which worked as the temporary demarcation line in 1954.

Not far from the newly-discovered tunnel are two tunnels that were dug by locals during the war.

In the years 1965-1968, when the US expanded the war in north Vietnam, particularly in the border area  Vinh Linh, people created a system of 114 tunnels and bunker villages across 15 coastal communes.

This system sheltered Vinh Linh people and solders from the bombing of the US Air Force.

In January 2015, the Vinh Linh village tunnel and Vinh Moc tunnel system was recognized a special national relic site.
