According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, after recent episodes of hail and intense storms, northern and central regions will experience a short period of relative stability lasting about three days before conditions shift again.
Nguyen Van Huong, head of weather forecasting, said that around May 8-9, a strengthened cold air mass will move southward, triggering widespread thunderstorms across the north.
“Notably, this weather system will occur over the weekend and carries a high risk of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts,” he warned.
In Hanoi, the weather in the coming days is expected to show clear variation. From May 5 to 7, as the cold air weakens and a low-pressure trough forms, the city will see light rain in some areas at night, while daytime conditions remain sunny, with temperatures rising slightly to between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius.
From the night of May 7 to 10, under the influence of the incoming cold air, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected, mainly in the late afternoon and evening. Temperatures will drop by around 2-3 degrees, bringing more comfortable conditions.
During the day, dry sunshine may still persist, creating favorable conditions for strong convective cloud development in the afternoon, increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events.
Nguyen Van Huong also explained that thunderstorms, whirlwinds and lightning are common during transitional seasons in northern Vietnam, particularly in April-May and September-October. However, the widespread occurrence of hail across mountainous, midland and delta regions earlier this month is considered relatively unusual.
Looking ahead, meteorologists warn that thunderstorms and hail may continue to appear more frequently in the coming period.
Weather outlook nationwide over the next 10 days (May 4-14):
From the night of May 4 to 6:
In northern and north-central regions, days will be sunny, while evenings and nights may see scattered showers and thunderstorms, creating generally pleasant conditions.
Other areas will experience sunshine during the day, with isolated showers and storms in the evening. The Central Highlands and southern regions may see scattered rain and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening.
From the night of May 6 to 14:
In the north, from May 7 to 11, widespread showers and thunderstorms will return, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall.
North-central regions will have sunny days, with occasional evening showers. On May 8-9, scattered thunderstorms are expected, with localized heavy rain.
Elsewhere, showers and thunderstorms will occur in the late afternoon and evening, particularly in the Central Highlands and southern regions between May 6 and 7, where some areas may experience heavy rainfall alongside daytime heat.
Meteorological experts advise that during all storm events from now until mid-May, residents should remain vigilant for signs of whirlwinds, lightning and hail, and take appropriate safety precautions.
