According to the Quang Ninh Economic Zone Authority, the pilot program allowing normal customs operations during weekends at the cargo control area of Bac Luan II Bridge, part of the Mong Cai International Border Gate, has delivered encouraging results since its launch on March 7, 2026.
During eight weekend days in March, a total of 1,484 cargo vehicles were processed, including 653 export trucks and 831 import trucks. The total value of goods reached more than US$159.9 million, while import tax revenue amounted to VND13.089 billion (US$530,000).
A total of 130 enterprises completed import-export procedures over the weekends, including 28 new participants, reflecting growing interest from businesses in utilizing extended clearance hours.
These figures underscore strong demand for customs operations beyond standard working hours, while also highlighting effective coordination between authorities on both sides of the border in facilitating trade.
From the beginning of the year through the end of the first quarter of 2026, total cargo traffic through the Mong Cai International Border Gate reached 124,815 vehicles. Trade turnover exceeded US$4.12 billion, and import-export tax revenue totaled VND800.79 billion (US$32.4 million), representing a 30.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Building on these initial outcomes, Quang Ninh authorities plan to further streamline administrative procedures, review logistics costs and intensify outreach efforts to attract more businesses.
The prospect of expanding customs clearance to seven days a week is now seen as increasingly feasible - a move expected to enhance competitiveness and unlock new growth opportunities for cross-border trade between Vietnam and China.
