Contrary to concerns that older devices would be left behind, iOS 27 will continue supporting iPhones from the iPhone 11 generation released in 2019, while introducing advanced CPU management technology designed to improve performance on aging hardware.
Apple unveiled iOS 27 during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026. Unlike the dramatic Liquid Glass visual redesign introduced in the previous release, iOS 27 focuses on performance improvements, stability and resource management.
Most notably, the update remains compatible with every device currently supported by iOS 26, extending software longevity for iPhone models first introduced in 2019.
Performance optimization for older hardware
At WWDC 2026, Stacey Ford, Apple's Vice President of Operating System Program Management, confirmed that the iPhone 11 lineup will receive iOS 27 this fall. The most significant enhancement is the integration of an advanced CPU management system previously available only on newer devices.
"Even when you're handling dozens of demanding tasks at once, the CPU manager ensures the right process is executed at the right time," Ford explained.
The improvement is expected to address lag and responsiveness issues experienced by some older devices running iOS 26, helping them deliver smoother and faster performance.
With the update, the iPhone 11 is set to enter its eighth year of software support. By comparison, contemporary rivals such as the Google Pixel 4 and Samsung Galaxy S10 received a maximum of around three years of major operating system upgrades.
In total, iOS 27 will support 30 iPhone models, including the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and the iPhone mini variants.
Artificial intelligence features remain limited
Despite receiving iOS 27, older devices will not gain access to the full range of new features, particularly those tied to Apple Intelligence.
Beginning with iOS 18, core AI features, including the upgraded Siri assistant, have been limited to iPhone 15 Pro models and newer devices.
Apple also said its most powerful on-device AI models will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 lineup and the iPhone Air series.
However, owners of older iPhones will still benefit from smaller design refinements, including a new left-to-right Notification Center gesture in iOS 27, along with privacy improvements and battery-life optimizations.
The iOS 27 developer beta is already available, while the public release is expected in September alongside the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and Apple's first foldable iPhone models.
