“Thanh am vuot dai duong” (Sound Across the Ocean), a film about prisoners on Con Dao, was the only Vietnamese production to break into the top five at the box office last weekend, as “Spider-Man” and “The Odyssey” continued to dominate theaters.

Thanh am vuot dai duong is the first state-commissioned film to receive a wide theatrical release under a new distribution mechanism. Set against the lives of prisoners on Con Dao between 1945 and 1954, the film opened on July 24 amid a wave of major foreign releases.

While it has not seen a dramatic surge in ticket sales, the film has maintained a steady audience. It was the only Vietnamese title to make the top five at the box office last weekend and has now earned nearly $190,000 after more than two weeks in theaters, according to data from Box Office Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day held firmly onto the top spot in its second week of release. As of the morning of August 10, the superhero blockbuster had surpassed $6.1 million in Vietnam after 10 days in theaters.

Internationally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day reached $1 billion in global box office revenue on its sixth day of release, becoming the second-fastest film in history to cross the billion-dollar threshold, behind only Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Second place at the Vietnamese box office last weekend went to the Thai romantic drama Dear You, which has grossed approximately $685,000.

The Odyssey, meanwhile, ranked third. The blockbuster has earned more than $3.65 million after nearly four weeks in Vietnamese theaters and is forecast to cross the $3.8 million mark this week. Internationally, The Odyssey has also surpassed $1 billion at the box office.

The animated film Detective Conan: Fallen Angel on the Highway remained firmly in fourth place after several weeks in theaters and has now grossed approximately $4.64 million in Vietnam.
