In the wake of a single night, Muong Pon 1 village (Muong Pon commune, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province) lies in devastation as flash floods have swept away, collapsed, and damaged hundreds of homes.

According to the Dien Bien District Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, the remnants of Typhoon No. 2 (Prapiroon) have caused heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides in Muong Pon 1 village, Muong Pon commune. The flash flood, which struck around 1 am on July 25, has resulted in 2 deaths, 5 missing persons, and numerous injuries.

The sudden deluge has caused severe damage to property, washing away 10 houses, collapsing 8, and damaging approximately 100 more. The floodwaters also buried 40 hectares of rice fields and completely destroyed 2 hectares of aquaculture. The initial damage estimate for Dien Bien province is about 2.7 billion VND.

Currently, Dien Bien district authorities are working with commune officials and various units to assess the damage and direct grassroots-level organizations to assist families in repairing homes and stabilizing their lives. Rescue teams continue to search for the missing and provide support and comfort to the affected families.

The Dien Bien Provincial Hydrometeorological Station has warned that heavy rains are expected to continue across Dien Bien district for several more hours, significantly hampering local search and rescue efforts.
