The entire village has been left in ruins, with search and rescue teams working tirelessly to locate survivors in the aftermath of the disaster.
According to local authorities, rescue teams managed to save 10 people and recover 15 bodies shortly after the flood struck. However, over 100 residents remain unaccounted for, with no contact or information available about their whereabouts.
Local resident reports indicate that the area has never before experienced such a catastrophic flood or natural disaster. The severity of the situation has taken everyone by surprise.
Hoang Quoc Bao, Party Secretary of Bao Yen District, arrived at the scene and described the immense difficulties facing rescue efforts.
"The area is extremely remote and isolated, with all roads cut off and communication completely down," Bao said. The challenging terrain and lack of access have severely hindered rescue operations.
Nguyen Van Nhat, Vice Chairman of Bao Yen District People's Committee, confirmed that the current statistics are incomplete, with more than 100 people still missing. "We are coordinating with provincial authorities to intensify the search and rescue efforts," Nhat added.
The affected area is split into two sections, each with a significant number of households. The rescue teams are facing substantial obstacles due to the rugged terrain and widespread destruction, making it difficult to locate and reach those still missing.
Lao Cai Chairman provides urgent update on devastating flash flood
On the evening of September 10th, Trinh Xuan Truong, Chairman of the Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee, provided critical updates on the devastating flash flood that struck Lang Nu Village in Phuc Khanh Commune, Bao Yen District.
"This was a catastrophic flash flood, causing severe damage," Chairman Truong stated. Lang Nu Village, home to 35 households and 128 people, has been entirely buried by the flood. As of 6 p.m. today, rescue teams have recovered 15 bodies, with 30 individuals rescued. Many more remain missing, with over 100 people still unaccounted for.
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the provincial authorities reported the situation to the central government and Military Region 2, requesting support for search and rescue efforts. The province has activated its "four-on-the-spot" response plan, mobilizing 100% of available personnel, including soldiers and local residents, to search for survivors.
Chairman Truong added that the province has asked Military Region 2 to send additional forces to assist in the search for victims buried by the flood. However, the operation faces significant challenges due to the remote location of the disaster, which is far from the center of the district and cut off from communication and transportation networks.
Currently, Hoang Quoc Bao, Secretary of Bao Yen District, is on-site, personally overseeing the search and rescue efforts.
