Heavy rain has battered Nghe An, leaving one man dead, washing away crossings and isolating hundreds of households as flooding and landslides disrupt communities across the province.
On August 20, Nguyen Thi Van, Chairwoman of the Giai Lac Commune People’s Committee in Nghe An, said authorities had recovered the body of H.S.V., 46, a resident of Phuc Thanh Hamlet, after he was swept away in Chua Stream.
According to initial information, V. went to the Chua Stream area that morning to catch fish. While fishing, he was caught in the strong current and swept away.
At around 2 p.m., authorities found his body downstream.
Elsewhere in the province, flooding caused widespread disruption as heavy rain combined with water flowing down from upstream areas.

In Yen Hoa Commune, a temporary bridge across Hoi Nguyen Stream in Yen Thang Village was completely washed away by floodwaters. The incident isolated Coc Tat Village and part of Yen Thang Village, affecting more than 300 households with over 1,400 residents.
Heavy rain also triggered landslides at several locations, disrupting travel and posing further safety risks.
Local leaders and relevant forces inspected affected areas, installed warning signs, erected barriers and set up checkpoints at dangerous locations. Personnel and equipment were also placed on standby to carry out emergency responses and evacuate residents if necessary.
In Dien Chau and Nghi Loc communes, rainwater entered the yards of many homes, reaching depths of more than 30 centimeters. In the Vinh urban area, several roads, including Ly Thuong Kiet, Phong Dinh Cang, Le Nin Avenue, the 72-meter road and Nguyen Canh Hoan, were submerged under 10-30 centimeters of water, making travel difficult.

In western Nghe An, heavy to very heavy rain on August 20, combined with water flowing down from upstream, caused water levels in streams and creeks to rise sharply.
Lo Duong Khanh, Chairman of the Tam Thai Commune People’s Committee, said the overflow crossing in Xop Nam Village had been submerged by floodwaters, preventing people and vehicles from passing and temporarily cutting off five villages from the outside.
A permanent bridge is currently under construction in the area.
In response to the dangerous conditions, the Tam Thai Commune People’s Committee warned residents not to enter rivers, streams, creeks or overflow crossings to collect firewood, catch fish or carry out other activities while heavy rain continues and floodwaters are rising.

Residents were also urged to closely follow warnings and updates from local authorities and relevant agencies on flooding and hazardous weather so they can take appropriate precautions.
In Tam Quang Commune, heavy rain also caused a large tree in the Sang Le forest area to break and fall across a road, temporarily disrupting traffic.
After receiving reports of the incident, Tam Quang authorities dispatched officials and machinery to the scene. Relevant forces cut up and removed the fallen tree before clearing the roadway.
