The People's Committee of Ly Son Special Zone in Quang Ngai Province said authorities investigated the incident after receiving reports on the afternoon of Aug. 4.

Officials from the local Culture and Social Affairs Division, Border Guard Station and police identified the rider as Z.X.D., 30, a Chinese national, who drove a motorbike bearing registration number 29B1-415.xx directly onto the basalt rock arch despite warning signs prohibiting climbing or damaging the protected site.

During questioning, the tourist admitted his actions and apologized. He told authorities that he could not understand the warning signs because he did not speak either Vietnamese or English, adding that he simply wanted to ride closer to the scenic rock formation after finding the area attractive.

Authorities recorded the incident, explained regulations protecting cultural heritage sites, issued a formal warning and required the tourist to sign a written pledge not to repeat the violation.

Following the case, local authorities urged both residents and visitors to strictly observe warning signs and site regulations and to refrain from any activities that could damage historical or natural landmarks.

To Vo Gate is one of Ly Son Island's best-known attractions and was designated a national heritage site by Vietnam's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in September 2025.

The natural basalt arch was formed by volcanic eruptions from Gieng Tien Volcano and centuries of coastal erosion. The rock formation measures approximately 20 meters long and 2.5 meters high.

Beyond its geological significance, To Vo Gate forms part of Ly Son's broader maritime cultural heritage, alongside historical sites, traditional festivals and landmarks associated with Vietnam's history of protecting its seas and islands.
