Fresh leaks surrounding Samsung’s next generation of foldable smartphones - the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra - are becoming increasingly difficult to decipher.

Over the past few months, well-known leaker Ice Universe has repeatedly shared conflicting information regarding the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, leaving technology enthusiasts unsure of what to expect.

Just last week, the source claimed that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 would retain a screen crease largely similar to that of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

However, according to newly obtained insider information, Samsung appears to have changed course at the last minute.

If the latest details prove accurate, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup could feature one of the most significant upgrades in the history of the series: a dramatically reduced display crease.

The move would be particularly important as the foldable smartphone market enters an increasingly competitive phase, where manufacturers are no longer competing solely on specifications but also on real-world user experience.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra may feature Samsung’s most impressive crease reduction yet
According to Ice Universe, both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will be equipped with a new foldable display technology that significantly improves the crease running through the center of the screen.

Samsung’s inspiration is reportedly coming from the Oppo Find N6, a recently launched foldable smartphone that has received widespread praise for making its crease nearly invisible.

Although Oppo has not completely eliminated the hinge mark, it has created what the company describes as a "zero-feel crease" - a fold that is virtually impossible to notice during everyday use.

Real-world testing suggests that the Oppo Find N6 offers a noticeably flatter and more seamless display than both its predecessor and many competing foldables. This is reportedly the benchmark Samsung is now targeting.

According to the latest information, the final design of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup has undergone substantial revisions.

Samsung had previously experimented with a design featuring a crease similar to that of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but the company appears to have opted for a more refined solution before entering mass production.

If successful, it would represent one of the most meaningful upgrades to the Galaxy Z Fold series since its debut in 2019.

Still, many observers are questioning whether screen crease reduction remains a decisive factor in the success of a foldable smartphone in 2026.

On the earliest Galaxy Z Fold generations, the crease was undeniably one of the product’s biggest drawbacks. It affected not only aesthetics but also the experience of interacting with and viewing content on the large display.

Over the past few years, however, Samsung has steadily refined both its hinge technology and display panels. On the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and especially the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the crease became significantly less noticeable, to the point where many users barely paid attention to it during daily use.

For that reason, some analysts believe that further reducing the crease, while certainly welcome, may not be enough on its own to transform the device into a sales phenomenon.

Instead, if Samsung hopes to turn the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup into a breakout success, it will likely need much more. Battery life, camera performance, durability, AI-powered software and pricing may ultimately prove to be the factors that matter most to consumers.

Samsung may be preparing a complete naming overhaul

Beyond the display improvements, another surprising rumor suggests Samsung could be preparing a major change to the way it names its premium foldable devices.

For months, industry watchers believed Samsung was developing a wider-screen foldable called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. According to Ice Universe, however, those plans have changed.

The device previously known as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is now expected to launch simply as the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Meanwhile, the model previously assumed to be the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 could instead be renamed the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

The move would be particularly interesting because the Ultra brand has long been associated with Samsung’s most premium devices, especially within the Galaxy S Ultra lineup.

If the information is accurate, Samsung appears to be building a foldable ecosystem that mirrors its Galaxy S strategy, with the Ultra model serving as the showcase for the company’s most advanced technologies.

Current rumors suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra could offer several advantages over the standard model, particularly in terms of camera capabilities and battery capacity.

The biggest question, however, is whether those upgrades will be substantial enough to justify the Ultra branding.

For years, Samsung has reserved the Ultra name for devices featuring major hardware advantages. Galaxy S Ultra models, for example, typically include top-tier camera systems, larger batteries, superior displays and S Pen support.

If the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra delivers only modest improvements in camera performance and battery life, Samsung may face challenges convincing consumers to accept a significantly higher price tag.

Nevertheless, if the company successfully combines a nearly invisible crease, a more premium design, advanced camera hardware and next-generation AI features, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra could become a major milestone in Samsung’s foldable smartphone journey.
