New rumors suggest Apple could increase the display sizes of both the iPhone 20 Pro and iPhone 20 Pro Max in 2027, while introducing a design that could mark a major turning point for the iPhone.

Under Apple’s usual naming sequence, the iPhone generation arriving in 2027 would be expected to carry the iPhone 19 name. But 2027 will mark 20 years since the original iPhone debuted, and Apple is rumored to be considering skipping iPhone 19 and moving directly to iPhone 20 to commemorate the anniversary.

Apple used a similar strategy in 2017. Rather than introducing an iPhone 9, it launched the iPhone X to mark the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone. If the latest reports prove accurate, the iPhone 20 could become another milestone generation in the product’s history.

Previous rumors have also pointed to a major redesign for the iPhone 20 Pro and iPhone 20 Pro Max. The devices could feature displays curved along all four edges, creating the appearance of a screen flowing seamlessly toward the sides of the phone. Face ID components and the front-facing camera are also rumored to move beneath the display.

A completely bezel-free design and solid-state buttons using haptic feedback are among other features expected to be under consideration. According to Bloomberg, the basic design of the iPhone 20 Pro and iPhone 20 Pro Max has already been finalized.

iPhone 20 Pro Max could approach 7 inches

Leaker Ice Universe, known particularly for information about Samsung Galaxy devices, has shared what are claimed to be display specifications for the iPhone 20 Pro and iPhone 20 Pro Max.

According to the leak, the iPhone 20 Pro Max will feature a 6.96-inch display with a resolution of 1,340 x 2,912 pixels. If accurate, that would be larger than the 6.86-inch, 1,320 x 2,868-pixel display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The iPhone 20 Pro, meanwhile, is rumored to have a 6.41-inch display with a resolution of 1,236 x 2,686 pixels. That would also represent a noticeable increase from the iPhone 18 Pro’s 6.27-inch, 1,206 x 2,622-pixel panel.

The figures suggest Apple could continue expanding screen real estate on its Pro iPhones while keeping overall device dimensions under control through thinner bezels.

A21 Pro chip, up to 16GB of RAM and possible HBM

The iPhone 20 Pro and iPhone 20 Pro Max are also rumored to receive significant internal hardware upgrades.

Both models are expected to use Apple’s A21 Pro chip, while RAM capacity could rise to 16GB.

More notably, Apple is reportedly exploring the use of high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, a type of memory currently manufactured primarily by Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron for AI data center systems.

HBM uses vertically stacked DRAM to provide extremely high bandwidth and improve data-transfer efficiency. If introduced in an iPhone, the technology could offer significant advantages for AI workloads processed directly on the device.

Growing demand for HBM is also putting pressure on conventional DRAM supplies. Because HBM offers higher profit margins, chipmakers are allocating more manufacturing capacity to it, contributing to tighter supplies of conventional RAM.

RAM prices are reportedly around 70% higher than a year earlier, making memory one factor behind rising component costs and smartphone prices.

iPhone 20 Pro Max tipped for 6,000mAh battery

One of the most striking rumored upgrades concerns the battery.

The iPhone 20 Pro Max could feature a battery with a capacity of around 6,000mAh, a substantial increase from the 5,567mAh battery in the US version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

If that happens, it would be the largest battery ever fitted to an iPhone.

Apple is also reportedly investigating the possibility of replacing current lithium-ion battery technology with pure-silicon technology, potentially allowing higher energy density without requiring a proportionally larger physical battery.

Combined with an A21 Pro chip manufactured using a second-generation 2nm process and Apple’s C3 modem, the iPhone 20 Pro Max could deliver substantially improved battery life.

That could become increasingly important as Apple expands AI features and other computationally intensive tasks performed directly on its devices.

While the early reports surrounding the iPhone 20 Pro and iPhone 20 Pro Max are attracting attention, their expected launch remains some distance away.

Current specifications are largely based on leaks and early predictions, meaning Apple could still change the devices’ design or hardware during development.

More renders, specifications and leaks are likely to emerge between now and 2027. But if the current rumors prove accurate, the iPhone 20 Pro Max could represent one of Apple’s biggest iPhone design shifts since the arrival of the iPhone X.
