“Red Rain” reached VND 551.4 billion (about USD 22.5 million) at 4:30 p.m. on September 7, surpassing Tran Thanh’s “Mai” to become the highest-grossing film in Vietnam’s box office history.

According to Box Office Vietnam figures, Red Rain hit VND 551.4 billion (about USD 22.5 million) at 4:30 p.m. on September 7, officially dethroning Mai (VND 551 billion, about USD 22.5 million) by Tran Thanh to become the top earner of all time.

Red Rain is the fastest revenue climber on record, needing only 17 days to seize No. 1 in Vietnam. It is the highest-grossing film ever on the revolutionary war theme and the first and only film by a female director to achieve this feat.

Red Rain is a true blockbuster in every sense: large-scale production, sweeping set pieces, and an explosive, unprecedented charge at Vietnam’s box office.

Red Rain officially opened on August 22 and has drawn millions to theaters, moving many to tears. Numerous viewers said they returned to cinemas multiple times to watch it again.

The moving epic about the 81-day fight to defend Quang Tri Citadel in 1972 has won over audiences and critics alike. At its current pace, Red Rain could collect VND 600–700 billion (about USD 24.5–28.6 million) and, as experts predict, may become Vietnam’s first trillion-dong blockbuster (VND 1 trillion, about USD 40.8 million).

The five highest-grossing Vietnamese films at the box office are as follows: Red Rain at VND 551.4 billion (about USD 22.5 million); Mai at VND 551.2 billion (about USD 22.5 million); Face Off 7 at VND 483 billion (about USD 19.7 million); The House of Mrs. Nu at VND 475 billion (about USD 19.4 million); and Dad, I’m Sorry at VND 427 billion (about USD 17.4 million).
