According to a preliminary report from the Thanh Vinh Commune People’s Committee, the area experienced moderate to heavy, and at times very heavy, rainfall from September 13-16.

By noon on September 16, heavy rain combined with rising water on the Buoi River had flooded the homes of 301 households with 1,136 residents in Yen Thanh, Thanh My, Thanh Tan and Thanh Yen villages.

Local authorities evacuated some households from areas with deep flooding, while others moved to safer parts of their homes. Families living in areas at risk of landslides were also relocated to safety.

The floods have affected agricultural production, inundating about 213 hectares of rice, sugarcane and other crops.

VietNamNet reporters observed that hundreds of households along Provincial Road 523 and National Highway 217B, from Kim Tan to Thach Binh communes, had been affected by the flooding. Many homes in low-lying areas were surrounded by water.

Families living in multi-storey houses moved people, belongings and livestock to upper floors to escape the rising water. Some residents of single-storey homes had to evacuate as floodwaters continued to rise.

In Kim Tan Commune, rising water on the Buoi River deeply flooded a number of homes in Thanh Truc villages 3 and 4. Authorities evacuated some families living in single-storey houses to safer locations.

As the flooding situation remained complicated, the chairman of the Thanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee instructed local authorities to maintain round-the-clock monitoring at deeply flooded locations.

Barriers and warning signs were also ordered at dangerous areas to prevent people and vehicles from passing through, while evacuation plans were to remain ready for immediate implementation if necessary.

Boat carrying around 10 people sinks in Nghe An

On September 16, a leader of the Party Committee of Yen Hoa Commune in neighboring Nghe An Province said a boat carrying around 10 people had encountered trouble while crossing the Hoi Nguyen stream.

All those aboard were safely brought to shore.

According to initial information, at around 4 p.m., the boat was carrying residents from the commune center across the Hoi Nguyen stream in Yen Thang village to communities farther inland.

Water levels were high and the current was strong at the time. The boat encountered trouble and sank as it approached the opposite bank.

Following the incident, Yen Hoa authorities suspended the transport of people across the waterway for safety reasons.

In emergencies requiring medical evacuation, local authorities said they would consider alternative arrangements.
