Tens of tonnes of fish have been found at a lake in the southern province of Binh Phuoc.

The mass fish death occurred at Binh Ha 1 Lake in Bu Gia Map District.

According to the initial information, the fish were owned by Duong Van Cu, a local resident who hired the lake for fish breeding. Cu detected the first dead fish at around 8 pm on April 23. The next morning, more dead fish was detected.

“My family has raised the fish in this area for more than 13 years. However, this is the first time I have ever seen such a mass fish death. A total estimated amount of around 20 tonnes of fish have died with the majority where intended to be sold soon,” Cu added.

Dead fish weighed up to 9 kilos. The incident has caused losses of around VND1.2 billion (USD54,545) for the family.

The mass fish death has led to serious pollution of the lake.

Local authorities also sent a taskforce to help Cu’s family to gather the dead fish. The cause of the incident is under the investigation.
