Hanoi has plans to develop hundreds of kilometers of urban railways, but only two railway routes have been put into operation over the last 20 years.
The People's Committee of Hanoi has developed a detailed master plan with the goal of completing the urban railway network by 2035 and making it even longer by 2045.
Hanoi plans to complete construction of 96.8 kilometers and fulfill preparations for investment in 301 kilometers of urban railways by 2030 with total investment of $14.6 billion. All railway projects are expected to be completed by 2035.
According to the Ministry of Justice (MOJ), traffic jams cause a loss of $1 billion to Hanoi every year. To settle the problem, the city needs VND1 quadrillion to build nine railway routes.
Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang, on behalf of the Government and Prime Minister, signed a report on the implementation of the railway development policy and the use of state budget to invest in railway transport.
