Unlike in previous years, retailers did not stage widespread launch events for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 this time around. Instead, each retail chain opted for its own approach to delivering the new devices.
Notably, Di Dong Viet was the only retailer to hold a launch event in Ho Chi Minh City with media attendance, handing over devices to customers right at midnight on August 8. These were among the first customers in Vietnam to receive the new phones after placing pre-orders in recent weeks.
The Z Fold 8, rather than the Z Fold 8 Ultra, has emerged as the most popular choice among Vietnamese consumers across mobile phone retailers.
The Gioi Di Dong recorded as many as 3,000 pre-orders for Samsung’s new foldable lineup, representing growth of 300% compared with the same period last year. The Z Fold 8 accounted for more than 50% of total sales, while the Z Fold 8 Ultra made up 35% and the Z Flip 8 15%. The retailer began fulfilling pre-orders and officially selling the devices on August 8.
Meanwhile, CellphoneS recorded nearly 2,000 pre-orders for Samsung’s latest foldables, an impressive increase of 105% compared with the previous-generation Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.
The Z Fold 8 dominated demand, accounting for 60% of all orders, while the Z Fold 8 Ultra represented 35%. Just 5% of customers opted for the Z Flip 8. The 256GB storage option and black remained the leading choices, accounting for 75% and 36% of orders, respectively.
At Di Dong Viet, around 500 devices from the new lineup were pre-ordered, with deliveries to customers beginning at midnight on August 8.
As at other retailers, the Z Fold 8 was by far the most popular model, accounting for 61% of orders, compared with 28% for the Z Fold 8 Ultra and 11% for the Z Flip 8. Notably, during its launch event on the evening of August 7, the retailer also auctioned a Z Fold 8, with the proceeds to be donated to the “Chap canh uoc mo tuoi hoc tro” scholarship fund at Cao Ba Quat High School in Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak Province.
What stood out at the event was the large number of customers who stayed up until midnight on August 8 to collect devices from Samsung’s latest foldable lineup as soon as they went on sale.
Minh Tuan Mobile recorded more than 250 customers registering for information and placing pre-orders, up nearly 5% from the same period last year. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 attracted the strongest interest, accounting for around 65% of all deposits. The 256GB version remained the most popular option, offering storage capacity suited to the needs of most customers. Around 100 customers who had placed deposits were able to collect their devices from midnight on August 8.
One of the highlights of Samsung’s foldable lineup this year is the Z Fold 8, priced at VND46.99 million (US$1,790). The foldable smartphone features a wider body and a display with a 4:3 aspect ratio in landscape mode and 3:4 in portrait mode, while its cover screen has a 10:16 aspect ratio.
The device measures 4.5mm thick when unfolded and 9.7mm when folded, weighs 201 grams, and carries an IP48 rating for water and dust resistance. Its Flex Titanium hinge, made with titanium alloy, helps make the crease running down the center of the display less pronounced. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, the same chip used in the Ultra model, while its rear camera system features two 50-megapixel sensors and it comes with a 4,800mAh battery.
