Located about 120km from Hanoi, Ngoa Van Peak - also known as Bai Da Chong or Bai Da Ngoa Van - has emerged as a popular camping destination in recent years thanks to its pristine natural beauty and refreshing climate.

The site lies along the route leading to Ngoa Van Pagoda and Ngoa Van Hermitage on the slopes of Bao Dai Mountain, also known as Dragon Encircling Mountain, in Quang Ninh Province.

At an elevation of around 500-600 meters above sea level, Ngoa Van Peak enjoys pleasant weather even during the height of summer. Lush vegetation and open landscapes make it an ideal destination for camping, picnics and short escapes from the heat.

Lush green scenery blankets Ngoa Van Peak during the summer months.

According to Lam Kien, a traveler from Hanoi, the demanding journey from the foot of the mountain to the summit is rewarded with magnificent views and a sense of adventure.

He said the landscape remains largely untouched, highlighted by the distinctive stacked rock formations of Bai Da Chong and expansive carpets of green grass. The area has become a favored location for camping overnight and waiting for sunrise above the mountains.

“There is only one route leading directly from the foot of the mountain to the summit. To reach the camping area, visitors must climb a steep section of road. Many parts of the track have been eroded, leaving large exposed rocks. The route is best suited to pickup trucks or four-wheel-drive SUVs equipped with all-terrain tires. Drivers using low-clearance vehicles or those with limited off-road experience should carefully consider the challenge, as the terrain is quite demanding,” Kien said.

The remote campsite offers cool temperatures, tranquility and a wilderness experience that appeals to outdoor enthusiasts.

According to Kien, the summit features rocky ridges, grassy hillsides and uninterrupted views stretching across the surrounding landscape.

The area remains almost entirely untouched by tourism development. There are no tourism services on the summit, meaning visitors typically bring their own tents, food, water and essential supplies.

Campers can choose to set up tents on the broad rocky plateau or on grassy areas near cliff edges that provide stunning views of the valley below.

On clear days, visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of nearby towns, Ben Chau Lake and the rolling mountain ranges in the distance.

Campers rise before dawn to witness the summit’s romantic sunrise views.

Because the camping area has little tree cover, daytime sunshine can be intense. Even so, temperatures remain relatively comfortable. At night, conditions become noticeably cooler, often chilly enough that visitors sleep comfortably without fans and may need jackets or blankets.

Kien noted that strong winds frequently sweep across the summit and thunderstorms can develop unexpectedly at night. Visitors are advised to check weather forecasts carefully and avoid camping during periods of rain or severe weather.

He also recommends using sturdy camping tents designed for windy conditions and securing them properly to ensure safety.

“My trip was completely spontaneous. During the night, powerful winds shook the campsite while thunder echoed through the mountains. Every flash of lightning lit up the sky before darkness returned seconds later. Then morning arrived as a reward for a long night of uncertainty. The sunrise was simply breathtaking,” he recalled.

On lucky days, visitors may witness clouds drifting across the mountaintops.

The ideal period to visit Ngoa Van Peak is from December through April, when rainfall is limited and the roads remain dry. These months are also considered the best time for sunrise viewing and cloud hunting.

From May through November, the scenery becomes greener and temperatures remain pleasant, though sudden rainstorms and thunderstorms are more common.

Visitors choosing to travel during this period should ensure their vehicles are properly equipped, carry waterproof gear and travel in groups to maximize safety.

Kien recommends bringing food, water and cooking equipment to prepare meals on-site.

Travelers planning a summer escape to Ngoa Van Peak should prepare warm clothing, light blankets and flashlights, as temperatures can drop quickly after sunset. Hiking shoes or sturdy sports shoes with good grip are also recommended because of the rocky terrain.

Since there are no shops or services on the mountain, visitors should bring sufficient food, drinking water and other essentials. They are also encouraged to leave no trace and help preserve the area's natural environment.

Those visiting the peak can combine the trip with stops at Ngoa Van Pagoda and Ngoa Van Hermitage, both located nearby.
