Located around 120 kilometers from downtown Hanoi, Khe Dau waterfall in Huu Lien commune, Lang Son province, has recently become a popular destination for travelers looking to escape the summer heat thanks to its cool natural surroundings, untouched scenery and convenient access.
The waterfall has emerged as an ideal destination for trekking, waterfall bathing and camping during the hot season.
Local tourism worker Tran Nhat Hoang said it takes around 50 minutes by motorbike from the main highway to reach the foot of the waterfall.
From there, visitors continue on foot through forest trails for another 20 to 30 minutes before arriving at the central waterfall area.
“Khe Dau waterfall is relatively easy to reach. Visitors can leave their vehicles at the parking area, then begin the journey across beautiful green grass fields before taking a light 15-minute trek to the waterfall.“The oute is suitable for both adults and children,” Hoang said.
The journey to Khe Dau waterfall is manageable for experienced trekkers, though it may still pose challenges for less active visitors or those with weaker physical endurance.
According to local guides, Khe Dau is attracting not only domestic travelers but also increasing numbers of foreign visitors interested in trekking experiences.
The waterfall rises more than 30 meters high, fed by streams flowing from Mo Ang Lake through limestone mountain crevices before cascading into white foamy waters below. Ancient trees and moss-covered cliffs surrounding the site add to its untouched and poetic atmosphere.
Besides sightseeing and photography, visitors can immerse themselves in the cool water and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings, where daily stress seems to disappear.
Hoang suggested that travelers can either join guided tours or explore independently, as the trail is relatively easy and marked with signs painted on tree trunks to help prevent visitors from getting lost.
Because the destination remains largely undeveloped and lacks tourism services, visitors are advised to prepare food, drinking water and personal essentials such as mosquito spray, sunscreen and hats.
Travelers should also wear gloves and sturdy trekking shoes with good grip because parts of the trail pass through areas with sharp limestone rocks.
Currently, Khe Dau remains a free-entry destination with very little human impact.
Visitors are therefore encouraged not to litter, break branches or damage vegetation in order to preserve the environment and maintain the waterfall’s pristine landscape.
Visitors are urged to help preserve the natural surroundings.
Travelers visiting the waterfall can also combine their trip with nearby attractions including Huu Lien Nature Reserve, Mo Ang Lake, Long Dau Stream and the surrounding ancient forest area.
The region is also known for local specialties that reflect the culinary traditions of Huu Lien and Lang Son, including black chung cake, smoked sausage, roast duck, sour pho, stream fish and smoked meat.
