Karissa Dumbacher, an American YouTuber with over 4.3 million subscribers, recently traveled to Hanoi, trying street foods including banh cuon (steamed  rice pancakes), bun cha (kebab rice noodles), and hot banh duc (rice cake). But she was most impressed with beef pho (noodle soup served with beef) at a famous eatery in Cua Nam ward (formerly part of Hang Trong ward, Hoan Kiem district).

The eatery, listed in the Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand (delicious, reasonably priced) category in 2023 and 2024, is a popular spot for both locals and international tourists.

Karissa observed that the shop has no signboard but is always crowded. The indoor space is small, accommodating about 30 people. During peak hours, customers queue up or sit on plastic stools on the sidewalks.

Because the dish is served on a plastic stool used as a table, regulars jokingly say diners have to “hunch over, knees aching” to enjoy their favorite pho.

Karissa ordered a serving of rare beef pho for VND65,000 (about $2.5). When the dish arrived, she took a sip of broth to taste its original flavor and immediately exclaimed in amazement. She described the broth as rich, aromatic, and flavorful. “This pho is truly delicious. The broth isn’t too salty.”

She said the beef was tender, sweet, and slightly fatty, largely due to the refined preparation. “Fresh minced beef is placed directly into the bowl, then hot broth is poured over it, letting the heat gradually cook the meat. This is truly the best pho I’ve ever eaten.”

So impressed by the flavor of Hanoi’s pho, Karissa even lifted the bowl to slurp the broth. She also tried adding a bit of chili sauce and garlic vinegar. The YouTuber humorously rated the pho “over 10 points” after seasoning, as the tangy-spicy flavors made it less  rich and incredibly tasty.

“I don’t know if this is the best pho in Hanoi, but it’s definitely the best I’ve ever had,” she said.

Beyond the flavor, Karissa also praised the generous portion for its affordable price and the vibrant Hanoi street atmosphere that enhanced the experience.

The pho shop Karissa visited has been operating for over 30 years. The owner, Ngo Thi Phi Nga, 64, is the granddaughter of Tu, the founder of the famous Pho Tu Lun brand.
